HUGE BOOST: Lions set to get a defensive boost for playoffs

The Detroit Lions are poised to receive a significant defensive boost just in time for the playoffs, as reported by Justin Rogers of the Detroit News. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill made his return to practice on Wednesday, marking a pivotal development for the team as they gear up for postseason contention.

Having designated the 23-year-old McNeill for return, the Lions have activated his 21-day window for potential reintegration into the lineup. Following his placement on injured reserve in early December, there is optimism that McNeill will make a comeback in the team’s season finale. Rogers highlighted that the defensive lineman is expected to play with a custom brace on Sunday, showcasing the team’s strategic approach to ensure his readiness.

McNeill had suffered an MCL injury in Week 13, necessitating a stint on injured reserve. Notably, the injury did not require surgical intervention and was classified as a sprain. This likely contributes to the swift return of the third-year professional to practice, underscoring his resilience and the effectiveness of his rehabilitation process.

Head coach Dan Campbell expressed enthusiasm about McNeill’s impending return, emphasizing the positive impact it could have on the team. Campbell noted on Wednesday (as reported by the team’s website), “Yeah, it’ll be good. It’s going to be good to get him back. And I know he’s looking forward to it just like we are, so he’s excited and he’ll get some work again here for us. You always, this time of year, for him, it’s going to kind of feel like Game 1 again. He’ll be fresh, have fresh legs and a fresh energy about him, so it’s good.”

McNeill, a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had been delivering standout performances before his injury setback. Starting in all 12 of his appearances this season, he accumulated three sacks, three tackles for loss, and four quarterback hits in the five games leading up to his sidelining. Pro Football Focus, recognizing his stellar contributions, ranked McNeill fifth among 131 interior defenders for his outstanding play in the 2023 season.

In McNeill’s absence, defensive tackle Benito Jones has shouldered approximately 55 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Notably, the Lions also witnessed increased playing time for Isaiah Buggs and Levi Onwuzurike during McNeill’s sideline stint. In a strategic move to address their depth chart, the team took the decision to cut Buggs from the active roster, streamlining their defensive options as they prepare for crucial playoff matchups.

Lions set to get a defensive boost

As the Lions approach the postseason, the return of Alim McNeill adds a crucial element to their defensive arsenal. The coaching staff’s careful management of his recovery, coupled with McNeill’s impactful contributions earlier in the season, positions the Lions to face the challenges of playoff football with added confidence and depth on the defensive front.
