Just a few months ago, many NFL analysts expected J.J. McCarthy to have an immediate impact as one of the top rookie quarterbacks entering the league. With the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback-friendly system under Kevin O’Connell, a strong offensive line, and arguably the best wide receiver in football, McCarthy seemed poised for early success.
However, recent developments suggest that McCarthy may not see the field as soon as anticipated. Reports from OTAs and training camp indicate that the Michigan product is not yet ready to step into a starting role, a sentiment echoed by the Vikings themselves. According to Ari Meirov on Twitter, the team’s first official depth chart lists Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback, with McCarthy and Nick Mullens sharing the backup role.
Despite expectations that McCarthy, who played under HC Jim Harbaugh in a similar environment, would be NFL-ready, the Vikings appear to be taking a cautious approach with their rookie. This decision aligns with the team’s investment in Darnold, who was signed for $10 million, signaling their intention to utilize him as a starter.
Although Darnold has had an uneven career, his talent and potential provide the Vikings with a reliable stopgap option at quarterback. The situation remains fluid, and McCarthy could still have opportunities to play later in the season. For now, it seems that the Vikings are opting for a measured approach with their promising rookie.
