Georgia Bulldogs star among favorites to be no. 1 Overall pick in 2025 NFL draft

Less than a year from now, the NFL will welcome a new influx of talent through the 2025 NFL Draft, and among the leading contenders for the coveted first overall pick stands Carson Beck, the star quarterback from the University of Georgia.

Carson Beck arrived at Georgia amid considerable fanfare as a highly-rated four-star recruit. However, he initially found himself playing behind established quarterbacks Stetson Bennett and JT Daniels during his early years at the university. Despite this, Beck’s talent was evident in sporadic appearances throughout the 2022 season, although he had to wait patiently for his opportunity to become the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback.

The turning point came in the 2023 season when Beck finally took the reins. He seized the opportunity with remarkable efficiency, completing an impressive 72.4% of his passes for 3,941 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions. While he may not possess the flashy improvisational skills of some of his peers, Beck compensates with an exceptional blend of accuracy, football IQ, and arm strength.

His ability to read defenses, make quick decisions under pressure, and adapt to various offensive schemes—whether from the shotgun or under center—positions Beck as a potential franchise quarterback capable of elevating an NFL team.

NFL scouts and analysts have already taken notice of Beck’s potential. According to Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, Beck boasted an adjusted completion percentage of 80.6% in 2023, ranking third among all qualifying FBS quarterbacks. His average depth of target (aDOT) of 8.5 yards also stands out, highlighting his ability to deliver accurate throws downfield—a crucial skill at the professional level.

Despite losing key receiving targets like Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey in the 2024 NFL Draft, Georgia’s program is known for reloading talent, ensuring Beck will continue to work with top-tier offensive weapons. However, Trapasso notes that Beck must demonstrate the ability to perform outside the structure of traditional plays—a skill increasingly valued in today’s NFL—to solidify his candidacy for the top overall pick.

Early projections, such as those by ESPN, suggest teams like the New England Patriots could be in prime position to secure the first pick and potentially draft Beck. However, the final outcome hinges on Beck’s continued development and performance in the upcoming season.

As the season approaches, the spotlight intensifies on Beck, with NFL franchises closely monitoring his progress. Whether he ultimately emerges as the number one overall pick remains to be seen, but his trajectory and skill set make him a compelling prospect in what is perceived as a challenging quarterback class for the draft. Until then, speculation will continue as teams weigh the potential of this promising quarterback from the University of Georgia.
