“RECORD SETTER!” – Veteran JJ McCarthy Set Another Record During Vikings Clash With The Twins

When the New York Giants selected LSU’s Malik Nabers at No. 6, it became evident that McCarthy would likely land in the NFC North with Minnesota. However, there were rumors that the Atlanta Falcons might take a quarterback at No. 8. They did select a QB, but it was Michael Penix Jr., not McCarthy. To secure McCarthy, the Vikings traded up a single spot to prevent Denver from leapfrogging them. In the end, Minnesota successfully acquired McCarthy, the former Michigan quarterback, in what can be considered an ideal outcome for a young quarterback.

The Vikings present a prime environment for immediate success in McCarthy’s rookie year. With offensive weapons like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ Hockenson, newly-acquired Aaron Jones, and a solid defense, McCarthy finds himself in an advantageous position just outside the top ten picks.

Here are McCarthy’s combine stats from 2024:
– Height: 6 feet 2.5 inches
– Weight: 219 pounds
– 3-Cone Drill: 6.82 seconds
– 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.23 seconds

According to NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein, McCarthy is described as an enigmatic quarterback whose attributes warrant further evaluation. While he lacks a robust physique and a strong arm typically associated with early-round quarterbacks, McCarthy demonstrates poise in the pocket and average pocket passing skills. He needs to refine his ball placement and timing, given his somewhat lengthy release. Despite not thriving in improvisational situations, McCarthy consistently makes positive plays and shows heightened focus during crucial game moments, particularly on third downs. His confidence and ability to turn perceived slights into motivation are noted strengths. However, Zierlein suggests McCarthy must continue developing to excel in the NFL.

In 2023, McCarthy’s statistics with Michigan were impressive: he threw for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just 4 interceptions with a completion rate of 72.3%. He also contributed 202 rushing yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. His leadership was pivotal in Michigan’s undefeated season and national championship victory.

Wolverine Digest highlights McCarthy’s standout 2023 season, emphasizing his versatility as both a precise passer and a mobile threat. As the NFL evolves towards a fast-paced, pass-oriented style, McCarthy’s dynamic skill set holds considerable appeal for professional teams.

JJ McCarthy throws brutal first pitch at Twins game

Vikings QB JJ McCarthy throws the first pitch for a Twins-Royals game

Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy doesn’t appear to have any immediate plans to switch sports.

On Tuesday, McCarthy had the honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch before the Minnesota Twins faced the Kansas City Royals at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn. However, McCarthy’s pitch didn’t quite hit the mark. The Michigan alum seemed to focus more on his speed than his accuracy, resulting in the baseball sailing several feet to the left of home plate.

After the wayward pitch left his hand, McCarthy was visibly embarrassed and quickly retreated from the mound as the ball headed towards the backstop.

McCarthy’s pitching mishap is not uncommon among athletes stepping outside their primary sport. Just last month, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud also struggled with their ceremonial first pitches.

Unlike Parsons, who recently made headlines with aspirations of potentially crossing over to Major League Baseball, McCarthy made no such bold claims.

The Vikings made a significant move in the 2024 NFL Draft by trading up to select McCarthy with the 10th overall pick. However, despite this substantial investment, Minnesota may not be ready to entrust him with the reins of their franchise just yet.
