F1 Rumor: The Real Reason Behind Esteban Ocon Alpine Exit Revealed

Esteban Ocon’s recent decision to leave the Alpine F1 team has been a hot topic, with many speculating that the dramatic incident during the Monaco Grand Prix played a pivotal role. Ocon’s risky overtake against his teammate Pierre Gasly, contrary to team orders, ended his race prematurely and fueled tensions within the team. Alpine Team Principal Bruno Famin expressed deep frustration at Ocon’s disobedience, hinting strongly at upcoming repercussions.

However, it appears that Ocon’s departure was not just a spontaneous decision fueled by one heated moment. According to Sky Sports F1 pundit Craig Slater (video below), the split was inevitable.

“I’m told that it (Ocon’s exit) has nothing to do with that (Monaco GP collision),” Slater clarified. “This would’ve happened, anyway. The advice I’m being given is the relationship between him and the team has come to a natural end. He had been there for 5 years, which is a long time in F1 terms,” Slater added. The need for fresh perspectives was evident. “Maybe the team needs a bit of freshness and new direction from another driver coming in,” Slater concluded.

The broader context of Alpine’s decision seems to reflect a strategic pivot, aiming to rejuvenate the team amid performance challenges. As Alpine looks to climb out of a slump, introducing new talent could provide the necessary boost. On the other hand, Ocon faces formidable obstacles in continuing his Formula 1 career. Despite the backing of influential figures like Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ Team Principal, the doors to other teams remain largely closed.

“It’s difficult for Ocon,” acknowledged Slater. “He is managed, to a degree, by Toto Wolff. But if Wolff wanted to put him in that seat replacing Lewis Hamilton, that would already have happened. I’ve been doing my rounds and finding, pretty much, that most of the doors seem closed for Esteban Ocon.”

The story of Ocon is not just about his recent performances but also underscores his journey in F1, marked by significant personal sacrifices. His father, a mechanic, sold their home and garage to finance Ocon’s early racing career. These personal stakes add layers to Ocon’s professional struggles.

The Frenchman’s departure from the Entone squad after the 2024 season marks the end of a significant chapter in his career.

Ocon’s journey with the team extends back to his teenage years, starting his Formula 1 professional career at Enstone, which makes this departure particularly poignant. Reflecting on his tenure, Ocon said the following in a press release:

“It’s been a significant period of my life to be racing at this team in Formula 1. While I’ve been here for five years as a full-time racing driver, my professional career started at Enstone back when I was a teenager, so it will always be a special place for me.

“We have had some great moments together, some tough moments as well, and I am certainly grateful to everyone at the team for these memorable times. I will announce my plans very soon but, in the meantime, my full focus is on delivering on track for this team and having a successful remainder of the season.”
