Houston Texans’ latest mega-contract raises Stefon Diggs question after huge NFL trade

The Houston Texans have inked a massive new contract with wide receiver Nico Collins, who’s signed on for £56 million ($75 million) over three years. This follows the team’s trade for superstar receiver Stefon Diggs, who will join Collins and rookie sensation Tank Dell.

Collins might have believed his tenure with the Texans was nearing its end as he approached the final year of his rookie deal, especially after Diggs’ acquisition earlier this offseason. However, following a standout year where he amassed 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns, he was offered a lucrative deal to reward his performances.

Some may view this as a gamble, given Collins’ average performance in his first two years before his breakout season – managing just 800 yards and three touchdowns in his initial 24 games. With the addition of Diggs and Dell’s promising future, Collins could potentially be the third-choice receiver on the squad.

However, Collins’ extension could now cast doubt on Diggs’ future. The Texans traded a second-round pick to secure the former Bills star, who is now in the final year of his contract.

With Collins locked into a hefty extension and the Texans splashing out on players like Laremy Tunsil and Danielle Hunter, the team will soon need to offer substantial contracts to quarterback CJ Stroud, pass-rusher Will Anderson Jr and the aforementioned Dell.

However, Houston now has time to build their roster around Stroud, with him set to be on his rookie contract for at least the next two years – while having a loaded offensive team around him.

Whatever the case after the 2024 season, Diggs will undoubtedly be the go-to guy for Stroud heading into his second season. One of the best receivers in the league over the last six years, Diggs has scored 67 touchdowns and have over 1,100 yards in each of the last six years.

In 2024, Diggs will earn a base salary of $18 million, underpaid by league standards with himself likely looking for a new deal – potentially before the season comes to an end.

In the position that the Texans are in, they could likely give Diggs an extension for two further years, but Collins’ contract might make it difficult to tie him down to a long-term deal.
