Ex-Red Sox infielder, Mass. native signs with AL East team

Alex Bregman, the former Houston Astros infielder and Massachusetts native, has signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. This agreement includes opt-out clauses after the 2025 and 2026 seasons, allowing Bregman to re-enter free agency if he chooses. citeturn0search0

Bregman, who turns 31 in late March, spent the first nine years of his career with the Astros, where he was a two-time All-Star (2018 and 2019) and won a Silver Slugger (2019) and Gold Glove (2024). He was a key player on two World Series-winning teams as well. Last season, Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 145 games. citeturn0search0

The Red Sox have not yet determined Bregman’s exact role in the infield. While he has primarily played third base during his career, the team already has Rafael Devers at that position. Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas has expressed a preference for Bregman to play second base, allowing Devers to remain at third. citeturn0search5

Bregman’s signing is a significant move for the Red Sox, strengthening their infield and adding a seasoned hitter to their lineup. His experience and accolades are expected to make a substantial impact on the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
