Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan wins MVP of the playoffs and the OHL title
He has proven almost all he can in junior hockey as Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan led the London Knights into the Ontario Hockey League Championship this past week and then winning the title on Wednesday night.
With the graduation of Joseph Woll, Nick Robertson and Matthew Knies to the NHL, there is no question that Easton Cowan is now the Toronto Maple Leafs top prospect.
The Leafs selected Cowan 28th overall this past NHL Entry Draft and many scoffed at selecting the forward that many thought went 50 picks too early, but he is done nothing short of proving everyone wrong. It’s funny to think that people were upset by the pick considering that outside of one or two players, the vast majority of people don’t know anything about prospects ahead of the draft.
Leading the Knights against the Oshawa Generals this past week, Cowan and his teammates utterly dominated championship by outscoring the Generals 31-9 in the four game sweep scoring no less than seven goals in any single game.
The future is bright!
Easton Cowan Was Unstoppable in the OHL Finals
Cowan led the Championship Series with 15-points in four games after collecting three goals and 12 assists, while also earning First Star in Games 1 and 4, while also being awarded the third star in Game 2. Throughout the entirety of the playoffs the Mount Brydges forward collected 34-points in 18 games including ten goals.
His performance led to him receiving the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as the OHL Playoff MVP, which comes a week after being award the OHL regular season MVP after he recorded 96-points in 54 games.
Cowan is following the path as current Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner who won the same three awards with the Knights (OHL MVP, OHL Playoff MVP, OHL Championship) in 2016. The Maple Leafs winger also won the Memorial Cup, Memorial Cup MVP and CHL Player of the Year that season.
Easton Cowan has now taken home the three major trophies in the Ontario Hockey League
Next up, Cowan and his Knights will head to Saginaw for the Memorial Cup which starts next week beginning on May 24.
The Knights took down the Saginaw Spirit in six games during the Ontario Hockey League Western Conference Championship. Along with the Spirit, the Knights will face the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Drummondville Voltigeurs.
The Western Hockey League championship is currently still underway with the Moose Jaw Warriors leading that series 3-0 against the Portland Winterhawks.
