It took nearly a week, but the Virginia Tech Hokies are finally on the board. On Wednesday, former Clemson safety Sherrod Covil revealed he was transferring to the Hokies for his last season of college football.
Covil, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety from Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, was a top-10 player in the 2022 recruiting class. Covil initially picked Clemson over Virginia Tech.
Covil’s stint at Clemson was hampered by injury, including a ruptured ACL in 2023. He participated in less than 200 snaps in the 2024 season but looks to be a significant part of Virginia Tech’s defense in 2025.
The Hokies lost Jaylen Jones to graduation and Jalen Stroman and Mose Phillips to the transfer portal. Rising sophomore Quentin Reddish is slated to start at one of the safety spots next season, and Covil will likely be Virginia Tech’s other starting safety.
The acquisition of Covil continues the history of Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry bringing players from Virginia back home to finish their college careers. It worked out well for defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland and wide receiver Da’Quan Felton, while defensive tackle Kelvin Gilliam returns in 2025 after transferring from Oklahoma.
Welcome home, Sherrod.
