Three officers used pepper spray during Ohio State-Michigan brawl, OSU officials say

Three law enforcement officers from different agencies used pepper spray during the on-field brawl following Michigan’s victory over Ohio State. The officers were from Ohio State University Police, University of Michigan Police, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Ohio State University Police Chief Dan Hedman stated that their use of force policy allows for pepper spray deployment when necessary for self-defense or to prevent harm to others. During the incident, one Ohio State officer sustained a head injury and was treated at a hospital.

Bodycam footage released by Ohio State shows chaotic scenes of pushing and shoving that began after Michigan players planted a flag on the “O” at midfield. One video clearly shows an officer spraying pepper spray, while another shows an Ohio State player shielding his face after the incident.

Ohio State coach Ryan Day was present during the brawl and was informed about the pepper spray use. Columbus Police bike patrol arrived later to assist in separating the players.

Ohio State is reviewing the incident and plans to adjust post-game protocols for future games. It’s important to note that no charges have been filed in connection with the brawl.
