Ohio State Top Prospect Enters NCAA Transfer Portal
In a move that has surprised many Ohio State football fans and analysts, sophomore quarterback Devin Brown has announced his intention to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Brown, who had been one of the top prospects in the Buckeyes’ 2022 recruiting class, is now exploring opportunities to continue his collegiate career at a different institution. This decision marks a significant shift in the landscape of Ohio State’s quarterback situation as the team prepares for the 2024 season.
Devin Brown’s decision to transfer comes after a season in which he spent much of his time as a backup to Heisman Trophy candidate, Kyle McCord. McCord, who started all of Ohio State’s games in 2023, led the team to a 12-1 record and a spot in the College Football Playoff contention. Despite the strong performance of McCord, the Buckeyes coaching staff had been high on Brown, who had shown flashes of potential during limited playing time in the previous season.
Brown, originally from Draper, Utah, was highly recruited out of Corner Canyon High School. He arrived in Columbus with much fanfare, having been ranked as one of the top quarterbacks in his class. His ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs made him a versatile option for the Buckeyes, and many expected him to compete for the starting role in the near future. However, after an offseason competition, it was McCord who ultimately earned the starting job, pushing Brown into a backup role for much of the season.
While he did see some playing time in blowout wins, including appearances against lesser opponents, Brown’s opportunities to showcase his skills were limited.
