‘Have to’: Danny Rohl now told the two positions he must bolster at Sheffield Wednesday in January

Dom Howson has told Danny Rohl the two positions he needs to bolster at Sheffield Wednesday next month.

Sheffield Wednesday, in their final home game of 2023 yesterday, lost 2-1 against Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds came from behind after Anthony Musaba‘s opener in the first half, with Karlan Grant scoring for Cardiff, and then an unfortunate own goal from Akin Famewo handing the visitors all three points.

It was a disappointing result after what was an overall sturdy performance from the Owls.

But once again, goalkeeper Cameron Dawson is coming under scrutiny following his error that led to Cardiff’s second.

The 28-year-old failed to hold on to a shot, palming the ball into the path of an onrushing Cardiff attacker who managed to force the ball over the line via Famewo.

Rohl has defended Dawson, but Howson has now told the German boss that he needs a new goalkeeper next month, and a new striker.

Dom Howson says Sheffield Wednesday need a goalkeeper and striker

Howson has now urged Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday to bring in a new goalkeeper next month, following Dawson’s struggles against Cardiff, and also a new striker.

Despite the emergence of Bailey Cadamarteri, Wednesday still lack depth in the attacking third and so an experienced striker coming in would give Cadamarteri some cover for the second half of the campaign.

After the game yesterday, Howson posted on X:

A crucial month for the Owls

January is very much panning out to be a crucial transfer window for the Owls; if not their most crucial in several years.

There’s a lot on the line right now and after yesterday’s performance, there seems to be some definite room for improvement in the XI.

Like Howson says, a new goalkeeper looks like an emerging priority; Dawson arguably cost Sheffield Wednesday at least two points yesterday, which in the position that the Owls are in, is unaffordable.

James Beadle has already been linked with a move to Wednesday but if their form is inconsistent over the next few weeks, Brighton may not favour sending Beadle to Hillsborough.

And a new striker to compliment Cadamarteri and take some pressure off his shoulders seems just as vital.

Birmingham City striker Scott Hogan has also been linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday, who look set for some smarter recruitment next month with Rohl and Head of Recruitment Kevin Beadell overseeing matters.
