Sheffield Wednesday defender Dominic Iorfa has said he’s open to signing a new contract but is focused on getting back his place in the XI for now.
Sheffield Wednesday have had defender Iorfa on the books for over five years now. He joined in the winter of 2019 from Wolves on a permanent basis and has played 154 times for the club since.
The vast majority of those outings have been in the Championship, though he was also a regular in League One. The 28-year-old has had spells where he’s been undroppable, but there have also been more challenging patches out of the starting XI, be it through favour or injury.
Iorfa has been back amongst the action in recent games though, appearing off the bench in the last two league games. His impact was felt last time out too, providing the assist for Ike Ugbo’s winner against Rotherham United.
His key contribution has raised questions over his future, but Iorfa isn’t too drawn on the matter.
As quoted by The Star, the Sheffield Wednesday man said that while he’d be more than happy to extend his expiring contract, his full focus is on getting back into Danny Rohl’s side for good. He said:
“I’ve been out so I’ve just been focusing on getting back fit. And I imagine that over the next few months then some conversations will take place.
“The window is shut now, so hopefully it’s something that we’ll get sorted out – but yeah, my focus has just been on getting back fit so I can get back to form, back to my best, and just help the team stay up.
“I’m very settled here, I’ve been here a long time. So I know the club well, know the fanbase, so if it happens then I’d be happy to stay. But we’ll see.
“I’m back now, and my focus is getting back into the team, performing well, and then we’ll go from there.”
The fight for a starting spot
With Sheffield Wednesday in such good form, it might be easier said than done to break into the starting XI. Iorfa’s ability to play as a centre-back or full-back will help, as will his contribution against Rotherham United.
His return to availability certainly gives Rohl food for thought as he looks to mastermind an unlikely survival at Hillsborough. After the win over the Millers, Wednesday are still three points from safety and 23rd in the Championship table, but they’ve now won three in a row and four of their last five.
Iorfa will be determined to play a prevalent role in the survival bid, but time will tell just how much action he gets amid the competitive fight for a starting spot.
