Pistons owner Tom Gores apologizes to fans, vows changes: ‘We have to right the ship’

In Detroit, a day following vocal expressions from fans imploring Tom Gores to “sell the team” in response to the Detroit Pistons setting a franchise record with their 25th consecutive loss, the team’s owner, Gores, offered a direct response via a Zoom call with local media on Friday night. Dismissing the calls for him to sell the team as “ridiculous,” Gores emphasized his commitment to the community and asserted that selling the team would equate to selling out the community. He acknowledged the need for more wins but argued that the team’s positive impact on the community was a crucial aspect often overlooked.

In a comprehensive conversation addressing the criticism surrounding the Pistons’ historic losing streak and their dismal 2-26 record, Gores expressed apologies to the fan base. He acknowledged the demand for accountability at all levels of the organization, including himself, but refrained from announcing any immediate firings or dismissals within the front office or coaching staff. Despite the team’s struggles, Gores conveyed that efforts were underway to address the situation, assuring fans of their commitment to resolving the challenges.

While in Detroit during the week, Gores engaged with key members of the front office, including General Manager Troy Weaver and Pistons coach Monty Williams. Conversations also took place with several members of the team’s young core, with the ownership identifying players like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Jaden Ivey, Isaiah Stewart, and Ausar Thompson as foundational to the ongoing rebuilding process.

Gores disclosed that the initial expectations set by the front office were to compete on a nightly basis and strive for a level close to the Play-In Tournament or even the postseason. However, the team’s actual performance has fallen short, currently holding the worst record in the NBA and on pace for only six wins for the season.

Acknowledging the discrepancy between expectations and reality, Gores pledged changes in the near future, expressing urgency in addressing the team’s struggles. He apologized to the fans and emphasized the need to “right the ship,” underscoring that while the ship is not sinking, immediate corrective measures are imperative. Gores stressed the importance of creating urgency and conveyed disappointment with the current state of affairs, signaling a commitment to taking swift action to improve the team’s performance.
