Dan Ballard gives Sunderland dressing room verdict on Tony Mowbray’s sacking and West Brom win

Sunderland defender Dan Ballard discusses Tony Mowbray’s stunning dismissal and the club’s 2-1 victory over West Brom.

Tony Mowbray’s dismissal surprised Dan Ballard, who wishes the former Sunderland manager well in the future.

After the 1-1 draw against Millwall, the Black Cats parted ways with Mowbray, and an interim coaching squad led by Mike Dodds took command of Saturday’s 2-1 win over West Brom at the Stadium of Light.

When asked about Mowbray’s departure, Ballard told the Echo, “Of course it was surprising.” “It’s always difficult when a management changes. When you reflect back to the Alex Neil era, it was once again startling. It’s never pleasant to lose a job, but as players, we have to go on.”

“I think the lads will probably all speak to him over the next week or so and wish him all the best because I think that is genuinely how we feel because he was a really good guy.”

“I think as a group of players, we all really got along with him,” the defender added. He’s just a really nice, down-to-earth guy. There was some disappointment because he gave his all throughout his time here, but we all wish him the best in the future.”

Sunderland’s first came from Ballard’s header of Alex Pritchard’s free kick, and Dan Neil added a second six minutes from time. West Brom substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante equalized for the hosts, but the Black Cats were able to snap a three-game losing streak.

“I think credit to the players and to Doddsy for stepping up,” Ballard said. “He’s put in a lot of effort this week, we tweaked a few things, and I think it showed in the performance.” We were directly behind him. We’re a professional group of guys, so we’d always go out and give it our all for whoever was in charge.”

As things stand, Dodds will remain in charge for Tuesday’s home game against Leeds, as Sunderland’s hunt for a new head coach continues. The Black Cats will then visit Bristol City the following weekend.
