Rangers hopes of recouping £2.5m on Dutch striker Sam Lammers rise as PSV stumble
Rangers loanee Sam Lammers assisted a goal for Utrecht and put in an impressive performance as PSV dropped points for the first time this season.
The runaway Eredivisie leaders – who hammered Rangers in Champions League qualification – had won a quite remarkable 17 out of 17 before coming up against the 26-year-old.
After Johan Bakayoko had given PSV a seventh minute lead it looked like the Dutch outfit, who are ten points clear at the top of the nation’s top flight, were going to make it a perfect 18 from 18.
But Sam Lammers had other ideas and gave both Rangers a glimpse into his talent and hope that maybe recouping £2.5m for his services isn’t so far-fetched.
Sam Lammers helps halt PSV
Sam Lammers’ assist v PSV showed why Utrecht were so eager to bring the forward on loan from Rangers and – whisper it quietly – perhaps why the Ibrox side paid Atalanta £3.5m for his services.
The former PSV hitman capitalised on a loose ball at the edge of the PSV box to look up, expertly pick his pass, and a fire a cross right onto the on-rushing Othmane Boussaid.
Given second place Feyenoord won their match with Vitesse Arnhem, it’s cut PSV’s lead at the top of the Eredivisie but already the ten point gap looks insurmountable.
Nonetheless, Ibrox fans will not the Sam Lammers assist with the Utrecht number 9 managing just one Premiership assist at Ibrox in 17 games.
It’s a return the forward himself has been open about not being good enough.
Utrecht will need to stump up for Rangers loanee
All this being said, the Dutch striker will need to start scoring before the pressure ramps up on Utrecht – or any other club for that matter – to splurge on his services.
Rangers insiders Heart & Hand have claimed that the club are willing to take a £1m loss on the forward, with £2.5m said to be enough to tempt the Gers into selling.
Signing a four year deal in the summer, there will still be three years to run when his loan deal with Utrecht is up.
The fact Lammers is out on loan at Utrecht is a damning indictment of the signing with the forward going down as an expensive flop at a crucial moment for the Gers.
There is clearly a talented player there but Sam has never been able to put it together consistently, with his return of two goals and two assists in 31 Rangers games paltry given the substantial outlay.
As things stand, there is no option-to-buy on the Sam Lammers to Utrecht loan but if the forward builds on the PSV performance perhaps £2.5m will look a more attractive prospect.
