Kawhi Leonard shocked the NBA world on Wednesday when he u nexpectedly re-signed with the LA Clippers at a discounted rate of three years, $153 million.
Leonard celebrated the signing by defeating his former Toronto Raptors team in a sound win on Wednesday night. After the game, he was asked about why he chose to re-sign with the Clippers during the middle of the season, and he gave the most Kawhi Leonard response possible.
“I don’t know,” Leonard said. “It was time, I guess. There’s nothing really to pinpoint. It was time to do it and it just happened.”
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Leonard’s deal includes $52 million in year one, and then $50 million a season for the next two seasons. He does not have a player option in the deal.
Leonard re-signing with the Clippers will likely create a domino effect where both Paul George and James Harden will re-sign with the team as well – Kawhi Leonard agrees himself.
“I think for the most part, everybody is coming back, so with me signing the extension, it gives us a chance to sign both players,” Leonard said.
The big three of Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and James Harden have proven to be one of the best in the league, and is arguably the best in the league. With the way things look, the Clippers will have a ton of star power heading into their new Intuit Dome arena.
