Sheffield Wednesday favourite could now leave if one transfer is made in January

Goalkeeper James Beadle has arrived on loan from Brighton to become the first signing of the Danny Rohl era, and there’s others being linked too, with one being Conor Coventry.

It’s said that the Owls are stepping up their interest in the 23-year-old who could join the club on a permanent deal this month.

But Coventry’s arrival could see fan favourite George Byers leave the club.

Posting on X yesterday, journalist Darren Witcoop revealed that Coventry to Hillsborough is a possibility, and so too is Byers leaving.

He’s so far featured 13 times under Rohl this season and 12 of those have been starts; Byers though has finished just one game under Rohl, often being the first player brought off.

Byers has played more games at Championship level than any other level (79). He’s proven himself in the second tier in the past and he’s proven himself to Wednesday fans too, with his performances last season earning him fan favourite status.

But he’s not had as much of an impact this season. He’s scored one and assisted one in 23 Championship outings for the Owls this time round, after scoring six and assisting three in 24 League One outings last season.

And with his contract out at the end of this season, it makes financial sense for the Owls to offload Byers this month if Rohl and co feel like he’s not going to move on further with the club.

Coventry’s potential arrival could pave the way for Byers to leave; Byers has been left out of the last two matchday squads now as well, potentially hinting at his impending departure from South Yorkshire.

Byers will no doubt be remembered fondly by Wednesday fans and for a lot of League One clubs, he’d be a huge coup in this month’s transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday return to league action away against Southampton this weekend.
