Sunderland’s decision to sack Tony Mowbray was inexplicable, according to Sky Sports analyst Don Goodman, as the Black Cats prepare for Saturday’s Championship match against West Brom.
Sunderland fired Mowbray on Monday, with an interim coaching staff lead by Mike Dodds poised to take command of the West Brom game for the time being.
“I can’t believe how stupid Tony Mowbray’s sacking is,” Goodman told BoyleSports, which offers the latest EFL betting. “Sunderland must exercise caution in what they wish for.” They’ve got a lot of quality that he’s brought in.
“He did an outstanding job. It’s incomprehensible that the club thinks he’s not doing a good job. Consider what he’s accomplished with Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts. With his coaching, he has improved every young player.”
Last season, Mowbray led Sunderland to sixth place before losing to Luton Town over two legs. Following last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Millwall, the Black Cats are ninth in the Championship table, three points out of a top-six spot.
Despite surrendering a last-minute winner against Leicester, West Brom sit five points ahead of Sunderland and in fifth place.
When asked to predict the match at the Stadium of Light this weekend, Goodman remarked, “This will be a tough game.” Sunderland don’t usually play draws, but I believe this will be one. I’m going to go with 2-2.”
Sunderland’s next home game, three days after facing West Brom, is against Leeds on Tuesday, December 12.
