Fabrizio Romano releases Kalvin Phillips update – Good & bad news for Newcastle United?

An intriguing update has emerged from Fabrizio Romano this afternoon regarding the future of Newcastle United target Kalvin Phillips.

He claims that Juventus have pulled out of the race for the 28-year-old, revealing that they have ‘no intention’ to pursue a deal following talks with Man City.

It’s believed these talks centred around a loan fee and the coverage of his salary, suggesting the Serie A giants are unwilling to match Man City’s demands. Romano adds that Newcastle ‘remain interesting’ with the ‘race open to more clubs.’

So, while it’s a positive that Juve are no longer contenders for his signature, clearing the path for a potential move to St James’ Park, this backs up claims that City are demanding a hefty loan fee; and a big chunk of his current salary to be covered.

Recent reports have indicated that we’re reluctant to pay the loan fee quoted – thought to be in the region of £7m – while salary demands could also prove prohibitive if he’s expecting to earn a figure that stretches beyond our current structure.

However, if Juventus have gone elsewhere and the player himself is eager to push through a temporary move to Tyneside, you’d hope Man City’s demands will come down as the window goes on, as he’s clearly not part of Guardiola’s short or long-term plans.
