Club chiefs ready response reported 7-figure Rangers transfer approach

Vitesse chiefs are prepared to “veto” any transfer of Rangers-linked Million Manhoef this month for fear that losing him will get the club relegated, according to De Gerlander.

The Dutch outlet reported on their website on 6 January that technical director Benjamin Schmedes and head coach Edward Sturing are united in their belief that the versatile 22-year-old needs to stay at the club despite the chance to earn millions on his exit.

With a comparable replacement not thought to be available the cost of relegation is seen as far more expensive than the fee the Dutchman could bring in, so the Eredivisie side are ready to block a departure despite interest from multiple countries.

The Scottish Sun had reported on 29 December that Rangers were leading the race for Manhoef, who can play as a winger, midfielder or left-back, and were lining up a £2.5million bid for him ahead of Leicester City and Preston North End.

Dead end

Considering his age, his versatility, and the ability that was demonstrated by nine goals and five assists in the Dutch top flight last season, it makes sense that there would be significant interest in the youngster, who only turned 22 on 3 January.

But if the powers that be at Vitesse are in agreement that he can’t go anywhere that might be the end of the matter for the winter window.

Manhoef could feasibly provide reinforcements for Philippe Clement at a number of positions of need, but it could be a moot point for now.

Rangers

The reported cash lined up for an approach is not insignificant from a Rangers point of view but it is unlikely that the club could come up with enough money to force the Dutch side to consider if they think he is key to their league survival.

So, with little time to get the necessary business over the line in the midseason window Clement will seemingly need to turn his attentions to alternative candidates.

Fabio Silva’s quick arrival kicked the month off positively but fans and manager alike will no doubt be disappointed if there aren’t further moves made before the deadline.
