HUGE BOOST: Lions cut TE, add two new players to the practice squad

The Detroit Lions continue to shuffle their roster in anticipation of returning players from injured reserve.

The Detroit Lions are actively adjusting their roster to accommodate new arrivals. Their recent announcement on Thursday revealed the waiver of tight end Anthony Firkser, marking the second departure from the 53-man roster this week, following the release of Isaiah Buggs.

Firkser held the position of the Lions’ TE3 in the past few weeks, filling in while Brock Wright was sidelined due to injury. During this period, Firkser predominantly contributed in a special teams capacity, accumulating 22 snaps in special teams play compared to just two on offense.

Though the team hasn’t made an official declaration yet, the prevailing anticipation is that Detroit will utilize these newly vacated roster spots to activate both C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Alim McNeill from the injured reserve in the coming days.

However, the tight end position remains a concern for the team due to Wright’s continued absence, leaving Pro Bowler Sam LaPorta and James Mitchell as the sole healthy players in that role. To address this deficiency, the team is considering two potential solutions. One option involves elevating fullback Jason Cabinda from the practice squad for the upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings. Alternatively, they could potentially re-sign Firkser to either the 53-man roster or the practice squad, contingent on him clearing waivers, ensuring his availability for Sunday’s game.

In addition to releasing Firkser, the Lions took action to fill the void on the practice squad left by Bruce Irvin’s departure by re-signing edge defender Raymond Johnson III. Johnson previously spent three months on the practice squad before being released in early December.

As it stands, Detroit currently faces the challenge of managing two open slots on the 53-man roster and maintaining a full practice squad roster without any vacancies. The team’s roster adjustments reflect their ongoing efforts to optimize player availability and depth, ensuring a balanced and competitive lineup for their upcoming games.
