As first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN, Clemson Football is set to hire veteran coach Mike Houston to its defensive staff. Houston, who brings over two decades of coaching experience, will assist newly appointed defensive coordinator Tom Allen.
Houston’s coaching career began at the high school level, where he served as defensive coordinator and head coach at various North Carolina schools. He transitioned to college football in 2006, taking on the role of defensive coordinator at Brevard College. He later held positions at Lenoir–Rhyne University, The Citadel, and James Madison University, where he led the Dukes to an NCAA Division I FCS Football Championship in 2016. Most recently, Houston was the head coach at East Carolina University from 2019 to 2024.
Houston’s appointment comes as part of head coach Dabo Swinney’s efforts to revitalize the defensive coaching staff following the hiring of Tom Allen as defensive coordinator in January.
Houston’s extensive coaching background and championship experience are expected to be valuable assets as the Tigers aim to strengthen their defensive performance in the upcoming season.
