Could Ryan Day leave the Ohio State football program for the Dallas Cowboys?

Ryan Day has performed a complete 180 with Ohio State football fans in the last three weeks. He has gone from a coach that fans wanted to be fired to being able to leave on his own terms if he beats Notre Dame. That’s how quickly things can change in the world of college football.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are just one win away from winning their first national championship since 2014. The only team that stands in their way is Notre Dame. Winning that final game next Monday would give Day an opportunity to be in Columbus for as long as he wants.

How long does Day want to stay, though? The lunatic fringe may have worn on the very last of his nerves. There are rumors that his wife wants him to leave after this season, no matter what happens on Monday. Could he be a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys job?

Odds Ryan Day leaves the Ohio State football team for the Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have already talked to Deion Sanders about their vacant head coaching position. Day has actual NFL coaching experience. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Jerry Jones reach out to him after the National Championship Game, especially if Ohio State wins.

Whether or not Day would be a successful NFL head coach remains another question. Those are the only valuable head coaching positions available, as none of the major college programs fired their coaches after the year. Because of that, he would likely have to leave for the NFL if he wants to leave at all.

What remains more likely is that Day ends up renegotiating a contract that makes him the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten and one of the top three coaches in all of college football. Right now, Lincoln Riley is the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten.

It would be surprising if Day decided to leave Columbus this year, but it’s not out of the question. If that happens, Ohio State would be scrambling to find a new leader.
