2024 Clemson Tigers Football Season Recap: Strong Offense and Key Moments Define Rollercoaster Year

The Clemson Tigers had a rollercoaster 2024 football season, concluding with a solid 10-4 record, which included an impressive 7-1 mark in the ACC. Despite the season being marred by a few disappointing losses, they finished strong and showed off their offensive and defensive prowess.

Offensive Highlights

Clemson’s offense was led by quarterback Cade Klubnik, who threw for 3,639 yards and 36 touchdowns, while also rushing for 463 yards and 7 touchdowns. His dynamic playmaking was vital to the team’s success, though he had some inconsistencies, particularly in the season’s final stretch. Receivers Antonio Williams (75 receptions, 904 yards, 11 touchdowns) and T.J. Moore (45 catches, 651 yards, 5 touchdowns) were Klubnik’s most reliable targets, providing balance and depth in the passing game. Tight end Jake Briningstool also contributed significantly with 49 catches and 530 yards, adding a vital presence over the middle.

In the backfield, Phil Mafah was the workhorse for Clemson, rushing for 1,115 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging a solid 5.2 yards per carry. His performance helped keep opposing defenses on their heels and provided a steady ground game, especially in big victories like the 66-20 win over Appalachian State and the 49-14 domination of Wake Forest.

Defensive Resilience

Defensively, Clemson was solid but at times lacked consistency, particularly in some of their losses–which ultimately led to the decision by head coach Dabo Swinney to part ways with defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin. Linebacker Wade Woodaz led the team with 89 tackles, while the defensive line, spearheaded by T.J. Parker (11 sacks) and Payton Page (2.5 TFL), provided consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The Tigers’ defense was particularly stout against the run, allowing just 160.6 rushing yards per game. Cornerback Avieon Terrell and safety R.J. Mickens were key contributors in the secondary, with Terrell snagging 2 interceptions and Mickens recording 2 as well.

Despite giving up some big plays, the Tigers’ defense remained opportunistic, scoring off turnovers and making critical stops in tight games. Their most notable defensive performance came in a thrilling 34-31 victory over SMU in the ACC Championship, where they kept the Mustangs from gaining momentum in the second half.

Special Teams

Special teams were another strength for Clemson, particularly in the return game. Antonio Williams was a threat in the punt return game, amassing 164 yards and averaging 9.6 yards per return. Kickoff returns were solid, with Jay Haynes leading the charge with 189 yards and a 18.9-yard average. Punter Aidan Swanson averaged 40.5 yards per punt, while kicker Nolan Hauser was reliable, converting 18 of 25 field goal attempts, including a long of 56 yards.

The Low Points

Clemson faced some setbacks, including tough losses to Georgia, Louisville, South Carolina, and Texas. These games exposed vulnerabilities, particularly in key moments when the offense couldn’t convert in the red zone or the defense allowed crucial plays. The loss to Georgia (3-34) was particularly tough, as Clemson was overwhelmed by a much stronger opponent. A close 14-17 loss to South Carolina marked the end of the regular season, leaving a bitter taste in the Tigers’ mouths.

Season Recap

Overall, 2024 was a season of ups and downs for Clemson, but it showcased their competitive nature and talent. They finished with a strong 7-1 record in the ACC, earning a spot in the ACC Championship game, where they triumphed 34-31 over SMU. Despite the frustrating losses, they remain a force in the conference and appear poised for a strong 2025 campaign with a solid core of talent returning, including Klubnik and key defensive players.

The Tigers will need to clean up their consistency issues in order to take the next step and challenge for a national title next year, but for now, their 2024 season stands as a testament to their resilience and depth.
