Jakarrion Kenan hasn’t visited Clemson since June 4, but the Tigers entering the mix a day before Signing Day with an offer was enough to give Dabo Swinney’s team the lead over other long-standing suitors on Kenan’s offer list.
The Bennettsville (S.C.) Marlboro County three-star safety committed and signed with Clemson on Wednesday afternoon.
He becomes Clemson’s first and only defensive back signee after the Tigers suffered multiple defensive back decommitments down the stretch, including four-star flips to Georgia Tech and Michigan.
Here’s everything you need to know about Kenan choosing Clemson.
WHAT JAKARRION KENAN SAYS ABOUT CLEMSON
“I committed to Clemson because of the history of the program and head coach, plus it’s my dream school,” Kenan told 247Sports on Tuesday.
WHO ELSE WAS IN THE MIX?
Clemson lost a commitment from four-star safety Jordan Young of Monroe (N.C.) earlier this week after Monroe flipped to Michigan. Thus, the Tigers were in the market for another safety.
Kenan, a late-bloomer overall as a Power 4 recruit, considered Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, NC State, and Virginia down the stretch before Clemson offered.
The Commodores were the runner-up and looked primed to land him on Wednesday until the Tigers offered.
The Hokies hosted Kenan on his most recent official visit last weekend, but Vanderbilt, which hosted him the weekend prior, fended off a late-push from Virginia Tech. However, the Commodores couldn’t withstand a pursuit from Clemson in the last minute.
WHERE JAKARRION KENAN RANKS AS A RECRUIT
Kenan (6-foot-1, 177 pounds) carries a three-star rating of 88 for 247Sports, which is two points away from a 90 (four-star).
He is the No. 47 safety and No. 14 prospect in South Carolina.
HOW JAKARRION KENAN FITS WITH CLEMSON
Clemson entered Signing Day with the No. 29 class in the country and is not expected to make a significant splash the rest of the day in terms of rankings movement.
The Tigers have the No. 4 class in the ACC behind Miami, Georgia Tech, and SMU, respectively. Clemson’s average rating per commitment (around 89/90) ranks No. 2 in the conference behind only the Hurricanes.
Kenan becomes the 15th commitment for the Tigers.
