South Carolina football losing highly-rated running back to transfer portal

South Carolina is set to lose sophomore running back Djay Braswell to the transfer portal. Braswell announced his intention to enter the portal, which officially opens next Monday, Dec. 9, through a message on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Tuesday afternoon. “This experience has truly been special to me,” Braswell wrote. “I have created lifelong friendships and memories, which I will always cherish. My time at USC has helped shape and mold me, and I am truly appreciative of the opportunities I’ve received here.”

A former four-star recruit from Georgia, Braswell joined South Carolina in the summer of 2023 and contributed as a true freshman. When injuries impacted the Gamecocks’ running back group late in the 2023 season, the 6-foot, 210-pound Braswell appeared in three of the final four games, recording 12 carries for 25 yards. However, his opportunities dwindled in 2024 after the team added four new running backs—freshman Matthew Fuller and transfers Rocket Sanders (Arkansas), Oscar Adaway III (North Texas), and Jawarn Howell (SC State). As a result, Braswell did not record any stats this season.

With three years of eligibility remaining, Braswell becomes the sixth South Carolina player to enter the portal. The Gamecocks finished the regular season 9-3 and await their playoff or bowl game assignment.
