Oregon football is enjoying a stellar season, and the Ducks just received more good news. According to On3, the program has flipped a major commitment from Miami: linebacker recruit Gavin Nix has decided to join Oregon.
Nix, a four-star prospect, was previously committed to the Hurricanes. This is a significant win for head coach Dan Lanning, whose team remains undefeated and is preparing to face Penn State in the Big Ten Championship.
“Learning about Oregon’s defensive style and the coaches’ impressive resumes really drew me in,” Nix said. “Coach Lanning and Coach B Mike are excellent, with a lot of experience developing players like me. I trust them to help me reach my goals and maximize my potential. Their deep knowledge of the game is inspiring.”
With Nix’s pledge, Oregon now has 17 commitments in its 2025 recruiting class.
Oregon’s Path to the College Football Playoff
The Ducks are a perfect 12-0 this season and look poised to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Their final hurdle is Penn State in the Big Ten Championship, as the two teams didn’t meet during the regular season.
Even if Oregon falls short in the championship game, they are in strong contention for a CFP at-large bid. The Ducks boast an impressive resume, including a pivotal win over Ohio State and victories against other tough opponents like Boise State.
Dan Lanning’s Impact at Oregon
Head coach Dan Lanning continues to build his case for national Coach of the Year honors. Now in his third season, Lanning has led the Ducks to a 34-5 record and overseen a seamless transition into the Big Ten after leaving the Pac-12. Oregon joined the conference alongside UCLA, USC, and Washington this season.
Lanning’s success at Oregon, including a 2-0 record in bowl games, has solidified his reputation as one of college football’s rising stars. His name is already surfacing in discussions for high-profile coaching roles at both the collegiate and NFL levels.
