Bama Coach Kalen Deboer Gives “Shocking” Reason Why He Took The Decision On Veteran Linebacker Keanu Koht
Alabama outside linebacker Keanu Koht has initiated the process to enter the NCAA transfer portal, as confirmed by his representation, A&P Sports Agency. ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news. Koht, a redshirt junior, has not played in Alabama’s recent victories against Mercer and LSU due to a suspension. Head coach Kalen DeBoer acknowledged the suspension but declined to specify its duration.
Koht’s 2023 season concludes with five tackles, a fumble recovery, and half a sack. He was a depth player on Alabama’s defense and previously earned praise for his athleticism and motor. Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack highlighted Koht’s potential earlier this year, citing his explosiveness and edge-rushing ability. However, injuries hampered his development throughout his Alabama career.
Koht, a former four-star recruit from the 2021 class, redshirted his freshman season and struggled to secure a consistent role. His departure comes as Alabama’s linebacker corps deals with injuries, including starter Que Robinson’s season-ending setback. This opens opportunities for other players like Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre to step up.
Koht won’t officially enter the transfer portal until it opens on December 9, with a 30-day window for moves. His decision adds to the uncertainty surrounding Alabama’s linebacker group as the team prepares for an SEC matchup against Oklahoma. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday in Norman and will air on ABC.
