BREAKING: Texans trade Cam Akers to Vikings for draft picks

Cam Akers’ tenure with the Houston Texans has come to an unexpected close. On a day filled with notable trades—such as Davante Adams moving to the New York Jets and Amari Cooper heading to the Buffalo Bills—the Texans also made headlines by trading their third-string running back, Cam Akers, to the Minnesota Vikings. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero broke the news, reporting that the Texans will receive a conditional sixth-round pick in 2026 in exchange for Akers and a conditional seventh-round pick that same year.

This trade marks a reunion for Akers with the Vikings, who had also acquired him during the 2023 season. Akers is expected to play a backup role to star running back Aaron Jones. While Jones was recently injured during the Vikings’ October 6 game against the New York Jets in London, sources, including Pelissero, suggest that the trade does not imply any serious concerns about Jones’ long-term health. Instead, Akers will likely provide valuable depth to the Vikings’ running back corps, bringing with him a deep understanding of head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system, dating back to their time together with the Los Angeles Rams.

For the Houston Texans, this trade indicates growing confidence in their current running back situation. Dameon Pierce has emerged as a reliable backup to Joe Mixon, particularly following his standout performance against the New England Patriots the previous week. Akers’ departure opens up the third running back spot on the Texans’ roster, with Dare Ogunbowale, J.J. Taylor, and British Brooks vying for the position. Of the three, Ogunbowale seems to have the edge in securing the role.

The trade raises several questions for Texans fans, who are left to process the sudden move. While some may feel indifferent or view the deal as a minor transaction, others may have mixed reactions about losing Akers, who, despite being a third-stringer, brought experience and depth to the Texans’ lineup. As the NFL season progresses, both teams will see how these changes affect their performance and depth.
