Oilers Release Statement on Evander Kane’s Injury Return Timeline

The Edmonton Oilers have issued an official statement regarding the expected recovery time for forward Evander Kane following his offseason surgery. The team announced that Kane is expected to miss at least five months due to the procedure, leaving uncertainty about how they will replace his physical presence and offensive production during his absence.

The statement read:

“#Oilers forward Evander Kane underwent successful abdominal surgery last Friday in New York. Recovery from the procedure is expected to take a minimum of five to six months. His rehabilitation will be overseen by the club’s medical staff in Edmonton.”

While the Oilers have set a timeline of five to six months, some insiders suggest that this might be optimistic. According to Daniel Nugent-Bowman, there’s a possibility that Kane’s recovery could extend beyond six months, potentially keeping him sidelined for the majority, if not all, of the regular season. Nugent-Bowman noted on social media, “We’re talking about most or all of the regular season here.”

Given this extended absence, the Oilers may consider placing Kane on long-term injured reserve (LTIR), which would provide them with salary cap relief of up to $5.25 million. This move could allow the team to pursue another player to help fill the gap left by Kane’s absence. If Kane remains out until the postseason, the Oilers could take advantage of this cap flexibility to improve their roster.

There has been speculation about whether the Oilers intentionally delayed Kane’s surgery to keep him out for a significant portion of the regular season. While there’s no clear evidence to support this theory, the timing of the surgery has raised questions. Kane, however, mentioned that he needed time to assess if rehabilitation could avoid surgery and to research the best medical professionals for the procedure.

What the Oilers choose to do with the potential cap space if Kane is placed on LTIR will be telling. Hockey analyst Mark Spector speculated, “My money says the first game he plays this season is a playoff game,” indicating that Kane’s return may not happen until the postseason, if at all this season.
