Jeff Duncan: No NFL Team Matches the Saints When It Comes to Colorful Nicknames
In a recent column, Jeff Duncan of *The Times-Picayune* highlighted the New Orleans Saints’ long-standing tradition of bestowing some of the most colorful and memorable nicknames in NFL history. From legendary players to current stars, the Saints’ roster has been filled with players whose nicknames have become iconic in the football world. Duncan argues that no other team in the league comes close to matching New Orleans’ knack for coining nicknames that perfectly capture the spirit of the city and the team’s unique culture.
Among the most beloved Saints nicknames is “The Dome Patrol,” a moniker for the Saints’ ferocious linebacker corps of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Led by Hall of Famers Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Pat Swilling, and Vaughan Johnson, this unit was widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive groups in NFL history. Their intimidating play and dynamic personalities on the field were immortalized with a nickname that still resonates with Saints fans today.
In more recent years, Drew Brees, the Saints’ legendary quarterback, earned the nickname “Breesus” for his near-miraculous performances that led the team to numerous victories, including their unforgettable Super Bowl XLIV win in 2010. Running back Alvin Kamara, known for his smooth running style, has been dubbed the “AK-41,” a play on his initials and jersey number, while wide receiver Michael Thomas earned the nickname “Can’t Guard Mike” for his unguardable route-running and record-breaking catch numbers.
Duncan points out that the Saints’ flair for nicknames goes beyond the players. The team’s home stadium, the Caesars Superdome, is affectionately called “The Dome,” and its raucous fan base is known as the “Who Dat Nation,” a nod to the city’s culture and the famous “Who Dat?” chant that fills the stadium during every home game.
For the Saints, these nicknames are more than just catchy titles. They embody the identity of the team and its close connection to the vibrant culture of New Orleans. Duncan concludes that while many NFL teams have had their share of famous nicknames, none can match the Saints when it comes to blending football, personality, and the colorful character of the Crescent City.
