Nick Saban Receives Icon Award at 2024 ESPYS
On Thursday night, former Alabama head football coach Nick Saban was honored with the prestigious “Icon Award” at the 2024 ESPYS. The award was presented to Saban by two of his former Heisman Trophy winners, Mark Ingram (2009) and Bryce Young (2021), recognizing his significant impact on college football.
Saban, who took the helm at the University of Alabama in 2007, has led the Crimson Tide to an impressive six National Championships (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020) and 11 Southeastern Conference titles. Under his leadership, Alabama produced its first four Heisman Trophy winners: Ingram, Derrick Henry, DeVonta Smith, and Young.
After retiring on January 10, Saban leaves behind a remarkable college coaching record of 292-71-1, with 201 of those victories coming at Alabama. Known for his exceptional recruiting skills, Saban secured a top-five recruiting class for 16 consecutive seasons, according to 247Sports, and produced 47 NFL first-round draft picks during his tenure—a stark contrast to the program’s lack of drafted players before he arrived.
During his acceptance speech, Saban expressed his gratitude and reflected on his coaching career:
“It’s a tremendous honor to have two of our Heisman Trophy winners present this award to me. I’m also deeply thankful for the former players who are here tonight. We have such a great group that we could probably have a practice right after the show,” he quipped.
He continued, “We’ve been fortunate to have exceptional athletes who are also outstanding people. That combination has been crucial to our success. When we talk about iconic figures like Michael Jordan or Serena Williams, it’s about their achievements and how they represented themselves. For coaches, it’s about how you represent your team and how they, in turn, represent you. Think of legends like John Wooden, Coach Bryant, or Dawn Staley—what they achieved was remarkable, but it was their character and leadership that defined them.”
Saban also acknowledged the importance of teamwork and support, both on and off the field. “Building a successful team requires not only great players but also supportive coaches, staff, and family. My wife, Ms. Terry, has been my rock for 52 years, and my family has made countless sacrifices. This award is as much theirs as it is mine.”
He emphasized the values he instilled in his players: respect, accountability, and dedication. “In college football, it’s crucial for players to prepare for their future beyond the game. I’m proud that our program has produced 668 degrees over 17 years, showing our commitment to their development.”
Saban also highlighted the impact of compassion and community service, mentioning his Nick’s Kids Foundation and the contributions of his players to various charitable causes. “We should all strive to make a positive impact every day. Instead of asking ‘How are you today?’, ask ‘Who did you help today?’ Sports have the power to unite people, and we have a responsibility to use that platform to bring others together.”
The ESPYS have previously honored Alabama football in various categories: Tyrone Prothro’s iconic catch in 2005 won “Best Play”, while DeVonta Smith and Bryce Young were both named “Best Male College Athlete” in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Shaun Alexander also won the “Best Record-Breaking Performance” award in 2006 for his record-setting NFL season. Additionally, other Crimson Tide players and moments have been nominated for various awards over the years.
Saban’s acceptance of the Icon Award not only celebrates his extraordinary career but also acknowledges the collective effort of everyone involved in his journey. As he moves forward, his legacy continues to inspire and shape the future of college football.
