“Not a daft boy”; SPFL boss comments on transfer interest with Celtic monitoring potential bargain

Luke McCowan was a standout for Dundee during the 2023/24 season, so it’s no surprise that clubs are interested in him this summer.

The attacking midfielder scored ten goals and provided five assists last season, helping the promoted team secure a respectable top-six finish in the Scottish Premiership.

He’s continued his strong performance this season, already scoring two goals and making three assists, including an equalizer against Dundee United in a thrilling derby on Sunday.

The interest from Celtic might be more unexpected. At 26, with experience at Ayr United and Dens Park, McCowan doesn’t fit the typical profile that the Bhoys usually pursue.

Last month, it was reported that the champions were ‘monitoring’ his situation, a point reiterated by Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph this week after bids from Hibernian and Bolton were rejected.

Tony Docherty on Luke McCowan

Dundee boss Tony Docherty has nothing concrete to report yet and is confident that the attacking midfielder remains focused on Dundee.

He told Football Scotland: “It’s speculation, but that’s because he’s a good player. He took control of the game for us on Sunday and was the best performer on the pitch. Naturally, this will attract attention.

“People talk, but for me, it’s pure speculation. Until I hear otherwise, Luke is my captain and a driving force in the team. He’s level-headed and shows real maturity, which is evident in his interviews. He knows how to conduct himself.

“Luke became a significant part of our leadership group last season and thrives on responsibility. He’s one of those players who steps up with responsibility and shows leadership qualities. That’s why he’s so important to Dundee. And he loves it here. So until I hear otherwise, he’s my player, my wee buddy, and he’ll keep playing.”

A viable Celtic squad option at the right price

Having proven himself as a strong performer in the top flight with impressive football skills, a move for McCowan at the right price could be beneficial.

With just a year left on his contract, the champions might find a potential bargain, using McCowan as a squad or rotation option.

While he may not improve the starting eleven and some may question the transfer, it’s understandable why Brendan Rodgers is keeping an eye on his situation.

With Docherty’s positive comments on McCowan’s attitude and character, he could be a good fit for Celtic’s ambitious and hard-working squad.
