Heading into the 2024-25 season, the Edmonton Oilers are in a strong position after a solid campaign where they fell just short of the Stanley Cup, despite a dramatic recovery from a slow start. With aspirations for their sixth Stanley Cup and a productive offseason behind them, the Oilers will focus on assembling the best team possible. By the 2025 Trade Deadline, they will have a clearer idea of their needs if they decide to make any additions. One player frequently mentioned in trade discussions is Taylor Hall, a former Oiler who had notable stints with the team earlier in his career.
Hall had a challenging 2023-24 season due to a major injury, limiting him to just 10 games. However, he seemed to fit well with the Chicago Blackhawks and rookie Connor Bedard during their brief time together. The Oilers, aiming for a championship, contrast sharply with the Blackhawks, who are still in a rebuilding phase and hoping their free agency moves will support Bedard and avoid the NHL’s basement.
Throughout his career, Hall has been a frequent subject of trade speculation. After his time with the Buffalo Sabres and subsequent trade to the Boston Bruins, he re-signed with the Bruins but was later traded to the Blackhawks to alleviate cap space. If the Oilers decide they need to strengthen their bottom-six forward group for a playoff push, a reunion with Hall could be a viable option.
Although Hall is now 32 years old and in a reduced role compared to his previous tenure with the Oilers, he remains a strong offensive player and reliable defensively. The Oilers, now with a deeper roster, would likely use him as a third-line forward. Despite past concerns about his locker room presence, which were never substantiated, his recent leadership with the Blackhawks alongside Bedard suggests he still possesses strong leadership qualities.
As Hall approaches the latter stages of his career, he may be keen to secure a championship. The Oilers could benefit from his experience and past success in Edmonton, particularly if current players like Evander Kane don’t return to form or Derek Ryan’s performance declines. A trade for Hall isn’t guaranteed, but if he is open to a reunion in a depth role, the Oilers should consider pursuing it at the trade deadline.
