Former Alabama Coach Nick Saban Talks About The Recent Death Situation Around The Club In His Message To Crimson Tide On Sunday

On Sunday, Alabama football coach Nick Saban praised Bobby Bowden, the former Florida State head coach who recently passed away at the age of 91, calling him a “wonderful friend.” Saban expressed that Bowden’s death is a significant loss but also an opportunity to honor a life lived exceptionally well. He emphasized that the essence of a person’s legacy often lies in who they were rather than what they accomplished, and Bowden exemplified this perfectly.

During a subsequent press conference, Saban highlighted Bowden’s role as one of the sport’s greatest ambassadors. He praised Bowden not only for his coaching success but also for his admirable character. Saban noted that Bowden’s approach to competition was marked by respect and kindness, setting a high standard for professionalism in the sport. Bowden, he said, demonstrated that one could be a positive influence without diminishing others, always prioritizing the well-being of those around him.

Saban reflected on Bowden’s substantial impact over a six-decade coaching career and his broader influence. He recalled recognizing Bowden’s profound effect on people even before others in the college football community might have. Saban shared a personal anecdote illustrating Bowden’s character. At a time when Saban was coping with the recent death of his father and his mother was struggling, Bowden reached out to offer Saban a coaching position at West Virginia. This gesture was a testament to Bowden’s compassion and willingness to support others.

Saban concluded by acknowledging Bowden’s significant contributions and the depth of his personal character, which extended beyond his professional achievements. He expressed his condolences, extending thoughts and prayers to Bowden’s wife Ann and their children—Terry, Tommy, Jeff, Ginger, Steve, and Robyn.
