On Friday night, Juan Gaston, a highly sought-after 4-star offensive tackle from Atlanta, Georgia, announced his commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs. This decision comes as a significant setback for the South Carolina Gamecocks, who had been hoping to secure Gaston’s commitment.
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer and Georgia head coach Kirby Smart have been actively competing for top recruits during this crucial recruiting period. Despite a challenging start, the Gamecocks managed to secure a commitment from 4-star safety Kendall Daniels, Jr., early in the three-week recruiting window. However, the rest of the period has been less favorable, with several recruits, including Lagonza Hayward (Tennessee Volunteers), Cortez Smith (Georgia Bulldogs), Giyahni Kontosis (Cincinnati Bearcats), Spike Sowells (NC State Wolfpack), Bryce Davis (Clemson Tigers), and Malik Clark (Florida State Seminoles), opting for other programs. Additionally, South Carolina faced a setback when Jaiden Braker, a 3-star linebacker/EDGE, decommitted and chose LSU.
Gaston’s decision to join Georgia, despite numerous fake-out announcements, was anticipated as the Bulldogs were considered the frontrunners throughout his recruitment. South Carolina, alongside Oregon and Tennessee, was a finalist but ultimately lost out to Georgia.
For the 2025 class, South Carolina has already secured a commitment from Shed Sarratt, a 4-star versatile offensive lineman from Gaffney, South Carolina. Sarratt, who can play both tackle and guard, is currently the top offensive lineman in the state for the 2025 cycle.
The Gamecocks still have chances to bolster their recruiting class. On Saturday, Jaylen Gilchrist, another major offensive line target, will announce his decision. Gilchrist, a 4-star prospect from Virginia who could play tackle or guard, is choosing between South Carolina, Maryland, and Georgia. While South Carolina was previously favored, Maryland has made significant progress, and predictions are split between the Gamecocks and the Terrapins.
Additionally, 5-star EDGE prospect Jared Smith will also announce his commitment on Saturday. Smith is considering South Carolina, Auburn, Georgia, and Ole Miss, with Auburn currently seen as the frontrunner. Despite Auburn’s strong position, South Carolina remains hopeful after previously leading in Smith’s recruitment.
