Nick Saban has long been a source of invaluable guidance for both players and coaches throughout his illustrious college football career, making it challenging to pinpoint his most significant piece of advice. Recently, Jalen Milroe, who played under Saban for three seasons as Alabama’s quarterback, shared his thoughts on the matter during an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up.”
Milroe identified “trust the process” as the most crucial advice he received. He explained that trusting the process means embracing and sticking to one’s journey, despite the unique challenges each person faces. For Milroe, who transferred from Texas to Alabama, this advice was particularly relevant as he adjusted to a new environment and navigated the demanding path to success. He highlighted that the process involves overcoming adversity, including periods of self-doubt and difficult circumstances. Saban’s leadership, according to Milroe, played a vital role in pushing him to be his best every day. The essence of this advice is to focus on improving daily and striving to be “1-0 each and every day,” emphasizing the importance of attacking each day with commitment and perseverance.
Milroe’s adherence to this principle was evident throughout his tenure with the Crimson Tide. Initially, he spent his first two seasons behind Bryce Young, the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner and the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Despite the wait, Milroe remained patient and dedicated to his development. When he finally got his opportunity, he faced immediate challenges, including being benched before Alabama’s Week 3 game against USF. However, he seized his chance when named the starter the following week, demonstrating his resilience and ability to bounce back from setbacks.
Milroe’s commitment paid off as he significantly contributed to Alabama’s success, including a pivotal role in securing the SEC Championship against Georgia and leading the team to the College Football Playoff. His journey was marked by perseverance through various obstacles, reflecting his trust in the process.
The advice to “trust the process” took on additional significance when Saban’s retirement was announced in January. Faced with uncertainty about his future, Milroe chose to stay at Alabama rather than transferring, showing his loyalty and confidence in the program’s new leadership under head coach Kalen DeBoer. As he enters the upcoming season, Milroe is now recognized as one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC, demonstrating the value of his commitment and trust in the process advocated by Saban.
