**Toronto Maple Leafs Eyeing Evgeny Kuznetsov After Contract Termination**
The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves with limited options in the free-agent market as they look to bolster their forward depth. An unexpected opportunity has emerged with the recent availability of Evgeny Kuznetsov, following the termination of his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
In a July 24 article, Jesse Courville-Lynch of The Hockey Writers suggested that the Maple Leafs should consider signing Kuznetsov. He argued that Kuznetsov, who was recently a free agent, could be a valuable addition to the team. Courville-Lynch noted that while there was speculation about Kuznetsov potentially joining the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in Russia, recent reports indicate he might return to the NHL for the upcoming season.
Courville-Lynch emphasized that adding Kuznetsov could be beneficial for the Maple Leafs without heavily impacting their salary cap. He estimated that Kuznetsov would likely seek a short-term deal, possibly for one season at around $1 million. Such a deal could provide the Maple Leafs with an opportunity to experiment with their lineup and address their need for additional forward depth.
**Kuznetsov’s Recent Challenges and Contract Termination**
Evgeny Kuznetsov’s 2023-24 season was marked by difficulties. After joining the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program following the All-Star Break, Kuznetsov requested a trade from the Washington Capitals, which was promptly granted. He was subsequently traded to the Carolina Hurricanes before the 2024 trade deadline.
On July 16, it was reported by Russian outlet Championat that Kuznetsov’s contract with the Hurricanes had been terminated. Initial reports suggested that Kuznetsov intended to return to Russia and join the KHL. However, Kuznetsov’s agent, Shumi Babayev, clarified that there was no confirmed deal with SKA Saint Petersburg, and it was premature to assert that Kuznetsov would be moving to the KHL.
Babayeva indicated that while there was interest from SKA, Kuznetsov had not finalized any agreement. He mentioned that Kuznetsov was eager to continue playing hockey and was open to exploring all options, including a potential NHL return.
**Potential NHL Return and Interest**
In a surprising development, Kuznetsov could reconsider his decision to join the KHL and remain in the NHL next season. Babayev revealed in an interview published on July 23 that up to 15 NHL teams have shown interest in Kuznetsov following the termination of his contract.
Babayeva stated, “There is still interest in Evgeny Kuznetsov from 15 NHL clubs. He has not made a final decision yet. Most likely, he is moving towards playing in the KHL.” However, he acknowledged that Kuznetsov is still open to NHL opportunities if the right situation arises.
At 32 years old, Kuznetsov has accumulated 11 seasons of NHL experience, with 575 points in 743 games. He was instrumental in the Washington Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup victory, where he earned 32 points in the playoffs. His extensive experience and proven performance make him a valuable candidate for teams looking to strengthen their forward lines.
The Toronto Maple Leafs, or any other interested NHL team, could potentially secure a seasoned player like Kuznetsov, who remains eager to contribute and excel in the latter stages of his career.
