SAD NEWS: Jim Montgomery Emotional As Former Bruins’ Star Reveals Why He Decided To Leave Boston As He Also Lists His Expectations As He Is Set To Join New Club After Completing All Formalities Of Contract Signing

The 2023-24 NHL season marked a challenging period in Matt Grzelcyk’s career, plagued by injuries that relegated him to long-term injured reserve and disrupted his rhythm throughout the year. Now, following his departure from the Boston Bruins in free agency to join the Pittsburgh Penguins, the defenseman is eager for a fresh start and a chance at redemption.

Reflecting on his tumultuous season, Grzelcyk disclosed that he suffered a torn oblique early on, a nagging injury that sidelined him and necessitated a stint on LTIR, forcing him to miss 10 games. “It was a pretty frustrating season,” Grzelcyk shared with reporters recently. “It was kind of a ticky-tacky injury that kept me out. I was forced to go on LTIR so I had to miss 10 games. It was a little tough just getting back and to the speed again.”

While acknowledging the impact of the injury, Grzelcyk also attributed his struggles to a loss of confidence as the season progressed. “I wouldn’t attest it all to the injury. I think I just lost a bit of confidence along the way,” he admitted. “As a player, it can be tough to regain that mid-season. I’m just trying to put that behind me now. I’ve had a really good summer so far. I’m definitely motivated to prove myself again as a player.”

Despite his deep ties to Boston, having grown up in Charlestown and attending Boston University before an eight-season tenure with the Bruins, Grzelcyk finds himself drawn to Pittsburgh for several reasons. He was drafted in the city, made his NHL debut against the Penguins, and scored his first career goal against them. “It’s a full-circle moment, and just talking with people, it just kind of feels like something that was meant to be,” Grzelcyk remarked.

Now 30 years old, Grzelcyk views his move to Pittsburgh as an opportunity to rebound and play a pivotal role in helping the Penguins return to playoff contention after two consecutive seasons without qualification. Embracing the challenges ahead, he is determined to make a positive impact and contribute to his new team’s success on the ice.
