Edmonton Oilers fans eagerly awaiting significant roster news this offseason were met with some developments on Monday, though not the contract extension for centre Leon Draisaitl they had hoped for. Talks continue regarding Draisaitl’s future as he approaches the final year of his current contract, with various figures and scenarios circulating online but no definitive agreement reached yet.
Instead, the Oilers focused on internal adjustments, finalizing a deal with the Ottawa Senators. This trade brings forward Roby Jarventie and a fourth-round draft pick in next year’s draft to Edmonton. In exchange, the Senators receive Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson, adding depth to their forward lineup.
Jarventie, a sizable 6-foot-2, 214-pound forward from Finland, was selected 33rd overall by the Senators in the 2020 NHL Draft. Prior to his draft selection, he played for Koovee in Tampere, Finland. His professional career advanced through four seasons with the Belleville Senators in the AHL, where he tallied 86 points (38 goals, 48 assists) in 136 games, along with 106 penalty minutes. Despite a knee injury sidelining him for three months in 2022, Jarventie managed one assist in seven games with the Ottawa Senators last season.
While the Oilers’ latest transaction with Ottawa addresses minor roster adjustments, the central focus remains on negotiations with Draisaitl, aiming to secure a significant extension before the upcoming season commences. As discussions persist, Edmonton continues to strategize for the best roster composition moving forward, balancing immediate needs with long-term planning in the competitive NHL landscape.
