Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced on Friday that the team has signed defensemen Michael Callahan and Alec Regula to one-year, two-way contracts, each with a salary cap hit of $775,000.
Michael Callahan, 24, played 70 games with the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL) during the 2023-24 season, where he scored four goals and provided 13 assists. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound defenseman has appeared in 140 career AHL games, all with Providence, accumulating six goals and 21 assists. Callahan also spent four seasons at Providence College, where he tallied 13 goals and 53 assists over 138 games. Hailing from Franklin, Massachusetts, Callahan was originally selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft. He was traded to Boston for a seventh-round draft pick on February 22, 2022.
Alec Regula, 23, played 55 games with the Providence Bruins in the 2023-24 season, recording four goals and 22 assists with a plus-36 rating. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound defenseman has played in 163 career AHL games with Providence and the Rockford IceHogs, totaling 16 goals and 61 assists with a plus-42 rating. Regula has also appeared in 22 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring one goal. Originally from West Bloomfield, Michigan, Regula was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round (67th overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. He was acquired by Boston along with defenseman Ian Mitchell in a trade that sent forwards Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno to the Chicago Blackhawks on June 26, 2023.
Both players bring valuable experience and depth to the Bruins’ defensive lineup as they continue to develop within the organization. Callahan’s steady presence and Regula’s strong two-way play will be assets for the team in the upcoming season.
