SAD NEWS :  NFL mourn Defensive coordinator whom  Pass Away at 78

 

Steve Sidwell, a revered figure in the NFL coaching community and former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator, passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 78. Known for his pivotal role in shaping one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses, Sidwell’s legacy is one of excellence, dedication, and profound influence on the sport.

 

Sidwell began his coaching career at the University of Colorado, where he had been an all-conference linebacker. His coaching journey took him from the collegiate level, including stints at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and Southern Methodist University, to the NFL. He joined the New England Patriots’ defensive staff in 1982 before moving to the New Orleans Saints in 1986 under head coach Jim Mora.

 

During his tenure with the Saints, Sidwell was the architect of the “Dome Patrol,” a linebacker unit widely regarded as one of the best in NFL history. This unit included Rickey Jackson, Sam Mills, Vaughan Johnson, and Pat Swilling, all of whom were selected to the Pro Bowl in 1992. Under Sidwell’s guidance, the Saints’ defense became a powerhouse, with players earning numerous Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. Rickey Jackson and Sam Mills were later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, while Pat Swilling was named the 1991 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year【6†source】【7†source】.

 

Sidwell’s impact extended beyond the Saints. He served as the defensive coordinator for the Houston Oilers (1995-1996), New England Patriots (1997-1999), and Seattle Seahawks (2000-2002). His coaching philosophy and strategies left a lasting imprint on every team he worked with, consistently improving their defensive performance and nurturing the careers of many players.

 

The Saints organization expressed deep condolences, with current head coach Dennis Allen remarking, “He was a tremendous defensive coach in our league, a ton of success. Lead the Dome Patrol defense, which is really the standard of defense for the New Orleans Saints. It’s what we aspire to be defensively. Sidwell was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 2004, a testament to his significant contributions to the team and the sport. His son, Scott Sidwell, paid tribute to him on social media, celebrating his father’s life and legacy.
