The Florida Panthers have signed defenseman Matt Kiersted to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced today. The 24-year-old Kiersted, a former NCAA champion with the University of North Dakota, adds depth and versatility to the Panthers’ blue line.

Kiersted spent the 2021-22 season with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, recording 21 points (4 goals, 17 assists) in 59 games. He also made his NHL debut with the Panthers, playing in three games.

“Matt is a talented young defenseman who showed promise in his first professional season,” said Panthers General Manager Bill Zito. “We’re excited to see his continued growth and development.”

The signing of Kiersted reinforces the Panthers’ commitment to building a strong defensive corps. With his skating ability and puck-moving skills, Kiersted is expected to compete for a spot on the Panthers’ roster this season.

“Matt’s a mobile defenseman who can play both sides of the puck,” said Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice. “He’s got a lot of potential, and we’re looking forward to seeing him take the next step in his development.”

Kiersted’s signing is the latest move in a busy offseason for the Panthers, who have also added forwards Matthew Tkachuk and Colin White to their roster. With training camp approaching, the Panthers are shaping up to be a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference.

“We’re building a team that can compete with anyone,” said Zito. “Matt’s a big part of that plan, and we’re excited to see what he can do.”
