OilersShake Up Goaltending Lineup : land a veteran goalie to bolster the team
Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oilers are poised to make significant changes to their goaltending lineup this summer, sources close to the team confirm. The first move is expected to be the buyout of Jack Campbell’s contract, followed by the signing of a veteran goalie to bolster the team’s crease.
Campbell, who signed a five-year deal worth $25 million in 2022, has struggled to find his footing in Edmonton. Despite high expectations, the 31-year-old goalie has failed to deliver, leading to a stint on waivers last November. With two years remaining on his contract, the Oilers have decided to cut ties and move on.
The team’s new management, led by Jeff Jackson and Paul Coffey, is eager to shake things up after the Oilers’ early playoff exit. “We need to make changes to get better,” said Jackson. “Our goaltending hasn’t been where we need it to be, and we’re taking steps to address that.”
One potential target for the Oilers is veteran goalie Phoenix Copley. The 30-year-old netminder has played for several teams, including the Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings, and boasts a respectable .905 save percentage over his career.
The Oilers are also exploring other options, including trade possibilities and free agency. “We’re leaving no stone unturned,” said Coffey. “We want to find the right fit for our team and get back to competing at a high level.”
The buyout of Campbell’s contract will come with a cap hit, but the Oilers are willing to absorb the cost to move forward. “It’s a business decision,” said Jackson. “We’re looking at the big picture and what’s best for the team.”
With the NHL Draft and free agency on the horizon, the Oilers are poised to make significant moves to revamp their roster. Stay tuned for more updates on the team’s goaltending plans and other offseason moves.
