Despite the commencement of free agency back in March, notable players like Hunter Renfrow, formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders, remain without contracts as August approaches. Renfrow, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound wide receiver, has garnered attention from analysts like The Athletic’s Alec Lewis, who advocates for the Vikings to consider signing him.
Lewis suggests that while Renfrow may not fit the traditional mold of a big-bodied receiver typically favored in the Vikings’ offensive scheme, he excels in one-on-one coverage and possesses the acumen to master the team’s route concepts from the slot position. Emphasizing a potential shift towards a pass-centric approach could further enhance the Vikings’ offensive strategy.
Renfrow, a former fifth-round draft pick, has already surpassed expectations during his NFL career, accumulating 269 receptions, 2,884 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns. Despite turning 28, he remains poised to deliver peak performances in the coming years. His standout year in 2021, where he earned a Pro Bowl selection with over 1,000 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, underscores his capability when at his best.
However, Renfrow’s production dipped in subsequent seasons, prompting the Raiders to release him after a decline in his yardage totals. Nonetheless, his track record suggests he still possesses the ability to perform at a high level, making him a potential asset for teams looking to bolster their receiving corps.
For the Vikings, considering Renfrow for a workout presents a low-risk opportunity to evaluate his current capabilities firsthand. Given his age and past achievements, there is optimism that Renfrow could contribute meaningfully to the team’s offensive strategies.
