Track and Field’s Crouser and Piperi advance to Shot Put final at U.S. Olympic Trials

 

In Eugene, Oregon, on the first day of competition at Hayward Field, a strong contingent of current Longhorns and Texas Exes showcased impressive performances, advancing in multiple events at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials.

Logan Popelka, a rising junior, delivered a standout performance in the 400-meter heats, clocking a personal best of 45.22 seconds. This achievement not only propelled him to the second spot on UT’s all-time performer list but also secured his advancement to the semifinals scheduled for Sunday. Alongside him, Texas Ex Willington Wright also excelled with a season-best time of 45.55 seconds, while recent graduate Brian Herron finished in 46.32 seconds.

On the women’s side of the 400 meters, rising sophomore Lauren Lewis led the Longhorns with a top qualifying time of 51.73 seconds, securing her place in Saturday’s semifinals. Courtney Okolo, a former Texas standout and NCAA Champion, followed closely with a time of 51.79 seconds, and recent graduate Ziyah Holman finished in 51.96 seconds, both advancing to the next round.

In the 800 meters, Texas Exes Valery Tobias and Kendra Coleman demonstrated their prowess by advancing to the semifinals. Tobias posted a time of 2:01.78, while Coleman clocked 2:02.45, setting up their participation in the upcoming rounds.

The field events saw equally impressive performances from Texas Exes in the shot put. Two-time defending Olympic Champion Ryan Crouser secured his spot in the final with a throw of 21.44 meters (70-4.25), marking the third-best throw of the day. Tripp Piperi, another Texas Ex, advanced alongside him with a throw of 21.32 meters (69-11.50), which ranked fourth for the event.

Adding to the Longhorns’ success on the track, Morolake Akinosun, a Texas Ex, delivered a season-best performance in the 100 meters with a time of 11.04 seconds, earning her a spot in the semifinals.

Overall, the performances of these Longhorns and Texas Exes underscored their strength and determination in pursuit of Olympic dreams, with many advancing to the next crucial stages of competition at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in Eugene.
