Sheffield Wednesday has announced their third summer signing, Tunisia international Yan Valery, marking their first acquisition involving a transfer fee. The versatile right-back joins new recruits goalkeeper Ben Hamer and left-back Max Lowe as the club continues to reshape its squad under Danny Röhl’s guidance. The transfer was completed for an undisclosed fee, following an agreement with Valery’s previous club, Angers, last week.
Valery is known for his attacking prowess and versatility, capable of playing in midfield or on the right side of a back three. He reunites with Röhl, having previously worked together at Southampton, where Valery made 43 Premier League appearances. His career in France includes playing in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, and he recently helped Angers achieve promotion to Ligue 1.
The Star reports that the opportunity to work with Röhl again was a significant factor in Valery’s decision to join Sheffield Wednesday, despite interest from major European clubs like Montpellier and Standard Liege. In a recent interview with the French media, Valery expressed his desire to return to English football after two years abroad.
Originally a France youth international, Valery switched his allegiance and debuted for Tunisia’s senior team in 2022, accumulating eight caps. Besides his experience in the Premier League and France, he also had a brief loan spell in the Championship with Birmingham City in 2021.
These three signings indicate a proactive approach by Sheffield Wednesday, anticipating a busy summer as they continue to strengthen their squad.
