Texas is feeling the impact of several new summer enrollees from the transfer portal who have joined early for June and July training sessions.
With less than 90 days until the start of the 2024 regular season, Texas football enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating preseason camp, just a few months away.
The Longhorns’ football program has welcomed numerous impactful transfers onto campus for summer workouts. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and his team seized the opportunity during the early stages of the offseason transfer portal, securing nearly a dozen players expected to make immediate contributions.
This increased reliance on the transfer portal reflects a broader trend in college football, where top programs like Texas strategically leverage experienced talent to bolster roster depth across all positions. All eleven transfers recruited by the Longhorns this offseason have commenced their summer workouts on campus. More than half of these transfers enrolled early to participate in spring ball, gaining crucial familiarity with the team dynamics. The remaining four transfers arrived in Austin a few weeks ago, ready to integrate into the summer semester.
Already, several of these new recruits are making their presence felt during summer workouts. Among them is Bill Norton, a graduate transfer defensive tackle from Arizona. Standing at an imposing 6-foot-6 and 325 pounds, Norton brings substantial experience, having previously faced formidable SEC opponents during his tenure at Georgia.
According to reports from Texas Football’s Bobby Burton, Norton’s arrival has immediately impressed coaches and teammates alike. His size and athleticism, perhaps underestimated prior to his arrival, have already made a significant impact on strength and conditioning programs.
Norton’s early adaptation and performance suggest he could emerge as a key player at nose tackle for the Longhorns, particularly as they prepare for rigorous SEC matchups. Alongside fellow super senior Alfred Collins, Norton is on track to anchor a formidable defensive front, providing critical depth and reliability.
