Sheffield Wednesday is on the verge of securing their first summer signing with the imminent arrival of Ben Hamer. Reports earlier this month indicated that the Owls were targeting the experienced goalkeeper following the expiration of his contract at Watford. The club aims to bring Hamer onboard along with last season’s successful loanee, James Beadle.
With the transfer window now officially open, The Star reports that Hamer’s signing is imminent. At 36, Hamer is set to become the first permanent signing under Danny Röhl’s management, following a series of loan deals completed in the January transfer window.
Hamer’s addition will be a significant boost, as Sheffield Wednesday currently has only one professional goalkeeper, Pierce Charles, on their roster. This situation arose after Beadle returned to Brighton & Hove Albion and Cameron Dawson, who was offered a new contract, appears likely to depart.
Hamer brings a wealth of experience, having played across all levels of the English Football League and making 19 appearances in the Premier League. Additionally, he has a pre-existing relationship with Chris Powell and Sal Bibbo and is fluent in German, adding further value to his signing.
Sheffield Wednesday is expected to have a busy summer as Röhl aims to assemble a team capable of improving on last season’s performance. Currently, negotiations are underway for new contracts and potential signings. The goal is to have key pieces in place before the team returns for preseason training in a couple of weeks.
